1. CROWDING OF FRONT TEETH IN UPPER AND LOWER JAW
This malocclusion generally intensifies in adults, where it may lead to aesthetic and functional problems.
2. MIGRATION OF SINGLE TEETH WITH ENSUING GAP FORMATION
Patients with periodontal disease often suffer from movements of single teeth which may cause not only aesthetic but also functional impairments. This should always be corrected through tooth alignment.
3. TREATMENT NEGLECTED DURING CHILDHOOD
Many adults with malocclusions should have received orthodontic treatment in childhood, but this did not happen either for personal reasons or because treatment methods at the time were not sufficiently developed.
4. ADJUSTMENT FOLLOWING THE LOSS OF A TOOTH
Where an adult loses a tooth, the resultant gap may be closed by brackets in many cases. The major advantage here is that no replacement is required.
5. ADJUSTMENT AS PRELIMINARY TO CROWNS OR BRIDGES
Where a gap is filled by means of an implant or a bridge, brackets may often be used as a preliminary (e.g. for the straightening of obliquely positioned anchorage teeth). In many cases, this will be the only way to apply crowns, bridges or implants of the highest quality.
